MORE MONEY FOR NORTHERN MEDICAL TAXI OPERATORS

Released on September 19, 2008

The provincial government is increasing rates for northern medical taxi operators effective immediately.

"We recognize the valuable service that medical taxies provide to our northern residents and we have responded to their concerns about compensation," Health Minister Don McMorris said.

For trips originating either in the north or south, the rate is increasing by $.07 per kilometre. There will also be an increase of $2 per hour for waiting times. This will bring the rates up to $0.82 per kilometre and up to $22 per hour waiting time.

"This is the first time there has been an increase since 2002. I'm pleased to say our government agrees to the rates needing to be adjusted annually," Meadow Lake MLA Jeremy Harrison said.

The Northern Medical Taxi Program provides funding for non-emergency medical transportation to medical appointments and treatments outside the community. The service is for clients receiving Supplementary Health or Family Health benefits.

"It's important that our most vulnerable residents have access to their medical care, and this transportation is an essential service that we want to see continue," McMorris said.
