BIOTECH WEEK PROCLAIMED IN SASKATCHEWAN

Released on September 18, 2008

Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud today proclaimed the week of Sept. 19-26 as Biotech Week in Saskatchewan.

"Biotechnology is important to Saskatchewan's economic growth," Bjornerud said. "The Biotech industry creates jobs, generates education opportunities and is vital to the future of our agriculture industry."

Saskatchewan is Canada's agricultural biotechnology capital with 30 per cent of the Canadian industry located in the province. The biotech community is composed of almost 1,000 Saskatchewan researchers whose focus includes food, health and the environment.

Events will be held in Saskatoon during Biotech Week, including an Education Outreach Day on Sept. 23. Approximately 500 Grade 7 and 8 students will work in the labs at the College of Agriculture and Bioresources at the University of Saskatchewan. The students will participate in hands-on biotech experiments focussed on DNA extraction, the creation of biodiesel and the power of fermentation.

On Sept. 24, Canada's first female astronaut, Dr. Roberta Bondar, a medical researcher and neurobiologist, will visit Saskatoon and meet with two groups to discuss the ways in which biotechnology helps people in their daily lives. She will address Saskatoon's business community during a Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce luncheon, and will meet with about 700 Saskatoon high school students at E.D. Feehan Catholic High School, which partners with the College of Agriculture on a special course in bioresource management.

Biotech Week is held in conjunction with National Biotech Week observed across Canada. For Saskatchewan and Canadian events, see www.imagenenation.ca.
