Six people with intellectual disabilities will have more independence and a better quality of life, following the grand opening today of a new group home in Wynyard.
The home will be operated by Wynyard Community Access, Respite, Rehabilitation and Education Services (C.A.R.R.E.S.) Inc., with annual funding of nearly $300,000 from the province.
"We're pleased to have partnered with the Town of Wynyard and Wynyard C.A.R.R.E.S. to develop this new group home for people with disabilities," Arm River-Watrous MLA Greg Brkich said on behalf of Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer. "This initiative again demonstrates our government's commitment to include people with disabilities in their communities."
The new six-space home is wheelchair accessible and specially designed for people with high care needs. The Town of Wynyard donated the residential lot for the group home, provided $40,000 toward the cost of construction and will be forgiving the taxes.
"The opening of our new group home addresses a real need in our community," Wynyard Mayor Sharon Armstrong said. "We are very appreciative of the ongoing annual funding that the province, through the Ministry of Social Services, is providing to operate the home. The Town of Wynyard also recognizes the dedication and persistence of the Wynyard C.A.R.R.E.S. group in getting the project into our community."
Wynyard C.A.R.R.E.S. Inc. raised $10,000 to contribute toward the building of the new group home. Wynyard C.A.R.R.E.S. is a community-based organization that has been providing services for people with disabilities since 1994. In addition to the group home, it operates a five-space activity centre, made possible by an additional $44,000 in annual funding from the province.
"Wynyard C.A.R.R.E.S. is delighted to be announcing the grand opening of our first group home," Wynyard C.A.R.R.E.S. President Lou Coderre said. "The years of lobbying and building our group from a small summer program to a beautiful group home has finally come to be reality. The project has received support from our province, our town, our service clubs and from individual community members. The community support of Wynyard and area has been overwhelming to all who have been involved in the project."
"This new home provides another residential option for people with intellectual disabilities in the Wynyard area," Brkich said. "It's a welcome addition to the network of quality supports that are already available for people with disabilities throughout Saskatchewan."
Through the Community Living Division of the Ministry of Social Services, the province provides nearly $75 million in annual funding to assist individuals to live as independently as possible within their own communities. Programs and services are delivered primarily through an extensive system of community-based organizations that provide social, residential and day program supports.
