GOVERNMENT, BUSINESSES JOIN FORCES FOR TORONTO JOB MISSION

Released on September 16, 2008

Premier Brad Wall and two cabinet ministers will join more than 50 Saskatchewan employers travelling to Toronto later this month on an unprecedented mission to attract skilled workers and new business opportunities.

Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris and Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart will also join the mission and work to tell the Saskatchewan story to Ontario job seekers and businesses at the National Job Fair and beyond.

"Saskatchewan's diverse and growing economy has created huge opportunities for job seekers and businesses alike," Norris said. "Missions like this one will help us to extend those opportunities to greater numbers of people, and in so doing help to sustain our economic momentum."

The centrepiece of the mission is Canada's largest career event, the National Job Fair. With more than 50 businesses, the Saskatchewan Recruitment Zone is the largest of any province, and will make a strong impression on the 12,000 job seekers expected to attend.

Government is further supporting the effort with a strategic marketing campaign aimed at drawing job seekers to the Saskatchewan Recruitment Zone and to SaskJobs.ca. The campaign, which represents a $400,000 investment, will include online, broadcast, outdoor and direct mail components.

Norris said he believes a similar campaign in June in southern Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta contributed to Saskatchewan now having the fastest rate of employment growth in the country.

"Even through there are 15,000 more people working in Saskatchewan than last year, there are still lots of great opportunities available - over 9,000 jobs posted on SaskJobs.ca today," Norris said. "We're combining innovative technology with strategic action to tell Saskatchewan's compelling story. It is an investment in spreading the word about Saskatchewan, in sustaining our economic momentum and sharing the benefits of that momentum with the people of this province."

The campaign is targeting highly educated immigrants in key Toronto neighbourhoods through a 60,000 postcard mailing and a barbeque hosted by Norris.

The National Job Fair and Training Expo takes place September 30 to October 1 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
