NEW PRIMARY HEALTH CLINIC OPENS IN CARLYLE

Released on September 10, 2008

Health Minister Don McMorris and local MLA Dan D'Autremont opened the new Carlyle Primary Health Clinic today. This clinic will feature a team approach to provide primary care and health promotion services, the health care team will consist of two physicians and a nurse practitioner and will draw on the expertise of many of Sun Country Health Region's health care providers including a diabetes nurse educator, a dietician and public health nurses.

"Primary health care teams are playing an increasingly important role in the delivery of health care in Saskatchewan," McMorris said. "The team approach allows people access to the right health care provider for their concerns and the opportunity to receive appropriate care and follow up."

The Arcola-Carlyle primary health care team was formed to offer services to residents living in Arcola, Carlyle and the surrounding area. The team and its services have since expanded. Clinicians now have access to advanced technology, including the Pharmaceutical Information Program. Diabetes clinics are also regularly held in Carlyle.

"Primary health care teams are very positive work environments for health care professionals," Sun Country Health Region CEO Cal Tant said. "The team model encourages staff to work to their full scope-of-practice, which leads to increased job satisfaction and decreased employee burnout."

To enhance the primary health care team's services, Sun Country Health Region is hoping to expand into Arcola.

"Communities in southeast Saskatchewan are really thriving right now," Government Services Minister and Cannington MLA Dan D'Autremont said. "We want to use this momentum to attract health care professionals to places like Arcola and Carlyle, so that residents will have improved access to a variety of high-quality health care services."

The Ministry of Health provided $125,000 for the project's start-up costs. It will contribute $188,100 annual funding to cover staffing and team development costs.

To date, there have been more than 50 primary health care teams established in the province, including 38 rural sites. The Government of Saskatchewan also supports many other primary health care initiatives, including community clinics, HealthLine, HealthLine Online, a provincial diabetes program and a mobile primary health care service in Saskatoon.
