Released on September 9, 2008
Beginning this fall, girls in Grade 6 will have the option to be immunized against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a virus that can lead to cervical cancer. In 2008 only, this vaccine will also be available for girls in Grade 7.
In March 2007, the federal government announced one-time funding to the provinces and territories to support the launch of a national program for the HPV vaccine. The Ministry of Health's share of the $300 million in federal funding is $8.9 million over three years. All provinces will be offering the HPV vaccine this year.
"The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to offer this program to young females in Grade 6 across the province," Legislative Secretary and Regina Qu'Appelle Valley MLA Laura Ross said. "We are committed to strengthening cancer care in Saskatchewan and the HPV vaccine is an important new tool in preventing pre-cancerous cervical disease and cervical cancer."
In 2008-09 only, the first year of the program, Grade 7 girls will also be immunized.
The Ministry of Health will provide parents with the information they need to make an informed decision about having their daughters immunized. Information sheets and consent forms will be sent home from school prior to the immunization being provided. There is no mandatory immunization in Saskatchewan.
"Health Canada conducts rigorous scientific reviews of the safety, effectiveness and quality of all vaccines prior to granting approval for use in Canada" Acting Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Shauna Hudson said. "The HPV vaccine, GardasilTM, is safe. It is not a live vaccine; it has no components that affect the safety or effectiveness of other vaccines, nor does it cause HPV in girls."
In addition to the HPV vaccine, the Ministry of Health will be providing a 2nd dose of mumps immunization for Grade 8 and 12 students. This is part of a catch-up immunization program to ensure young people are adequately protected.
