CANADA’S ENERGY AND MINES MINISTERS TO MEET IN SASKATOON

Released on September 5, 2008

Saskatchewan is playing host to energy and mines ministers from the federal, provincial and territorial governments next week in Saskatoon.

The annual Energy and Mines Ministers Conference, September 7-9, has a broad theme this year of "Social Licence". Ministers will discuss environmental and social considerations that accompany the economics around major resource projects in their jurisdictions.

"Companies making investment decisions on new resource developments have to be increasingly mindful of environmental stewardship and community co-operation," Energy and Resources Minister Bill Boyd said. "As ministers, we are committed to ensuring that as our dynamic mining and oil and gas industries move forward, they do so in ways that provide significant benefits for our jurisdictions and our communities while being good stewards of the land."

Approximately 200 delegates from governments and industry will attend parts of the conference where they will hear presentations on industry engagement with communities and First Nations. During their separate meetings, ministers will also discuss such topics as regulatory efficiency, skills training challenges, mining research and innovation, rising energy prices, new energy technologies, energy efficiency and climate change adaptation strategies.

Saskatchewan last hosted the Energy and Mines Ministers Conference in 1995. Boyd, who is co-chair of the conference, noted that much has changed in Saskatchewan's resource sector since then.

"We have one of the hottest economies in Canada, and much of our momentum is being driven by demand for resources like oil, uranium and potash," Boyd said. "We look forward to showcasing Saskatchewan's energy-rich and ‘resource-full' story for government and industry colleagues from across the country."
