THE PROVINCE IS INCREASING ITS SUPPORT TO MAINTAIN THE LEGISLATIVE GROUNDS

Released on October 27, 2008

Wascana Centre Authority will receive an additional $600,000 between now and the end of March 2009 to cover the shortfall incurred for maintaining the Legislative Precinct of Wascana Centre.

Wascana Centre is home to the province's Legislature. Sometimes referred to as the Legislative Precinct, the area is considered the most regal in Canada and includes the Queen Elizabeth II Gardens, Albert Street Promenade and the Legislative Grounds Proper. However, maintaining these legislative grounds historically costs more than the yearly budget the province provides to the Wascana Centre Authority to do so.

"The grounds of the Legislature are important to everyone in Saskatchewan," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "It is important that they are maintained in a manner that reflects the value we put on Wascana Centre and the legislative grounds."

The $600,000 was earmarked within this year's Saskatchewan Capital Commission budget to handle a request for shortfall funding from the Wascana Centre Authority. Another $100,000 is intended to be used to further develop the Capital Commission concept. The Wascana Centre Authority is expected to be an important part of the Capital Commission, once it is created.

Wascana Centre Authority will receive a total of $2,835,000 from the province during the 2008-09 fiscal year. The University of Regina and the City of Regina also provide significant funding to the authority.
