RETAIL SALES HIT RECORD LEVELS IN AUGUST

Released on October 22, 2008

Saskatchewan had another record month for retail sales in August according to Statistics Canada's retail trade report released today.

Retail sales for the month of August totalled $1.27 billion (seasonally unadjusted). This was an 8.4 per cent increase over last August and the highest August ever on record for the month of August. It was also the highest percentage increase in the nation. Nationally, sales increased by only 1.7 per cent.

"August was an exceptional month for retail sales," Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said. "We reached an all-time high for sales in the month of August this year, with the $1.27 billion recorded this year smashing the previous record of $1.17 billion set in August of 2007."

"Consumer optimism is an important measure of an economy, and we are confident the steps we have taken to secure Saskatchewan's economy and the future for families and individuals will help to make sure this trend will continue in spite of current economic difficulties," Stewart said.
