The provincial government is providing a $50,000 capital grant to help pay for the new office of Central Urban Métis Federation Inc. (CUMFI) in Saskatoon, Health Minister Don McMorris announced today.
CUMFI provides a range of services to individuals and families in Saskatoon. The non-profit organization moved into its new facility, at 315 Avenue M South, in May.
"The government is pleased to support the integration of CUMFI's services into one location," McMorris said. "We are committed to greater access to health, educational and social services in Saskatoon's core neighbourhoods. The government wants all Saskatchewan residents to benefit from the province's economic prosperity."
"Our vision has always been to have a community resource centre that is welcoming and inclusive of all people," CUMFI president Shirley Isbister said. "The opportunity to have all our programs under one roof in the Saskatoon core community sends a strong message that we are working together to improve the quality of life for Aboriginal people. We sincerely thank the Ministry of Health for the partnerships and support that have allowed us to move forward with our vision."
In addition to the one-time capital grant from the province, CUMFI has also received a contribution from the federal government to help finance the project.
McMorris said the initiative is another example of the Government of Saskatchewan and the Government of Canada working together with the community to improve life in the province.
Founded in 1993, CUMFI offers health, wellness, nutrition and addictions counselling, along with referral services and life skills and job readiness programming. The organization also provides emergency, transitional and affordable housing.
CUMFI's new office is also home to the Kinistin First Nation Urban Office and the Saskatoon Health Region's Our Neighbourhood Health Centre - Building Health Equity Program.
CUMFI, the Kinistin First Nation and the Saskatoon Health Region are working together to develop an Aboriginal health strategy that will address important health issues in Saskatoon's core communities.
