The province is taking steps to make sure the water levels in Lower Fishing Lake in Narrow Hills Provincial Park remain stable.
A $333,905 contract has been awarded to Whitford Construction Ltd. of Shipman, Saskatchewan, to build a new outlet control structure on Stewart Creek, which is the natural outlet for the water in Lower Fishing Lake.
"It is important that the water level in Lower Fishing Lake remains stable," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "Everyone using Narrow Hills Provincial Park has an interest in the lake level at Lower Fishing Lake. The Pine Ridge Resort, Caribou Creek Lodge, the park and local cottage owners depend on a stable lake level for recreation and to attract visitors."
The new water control structure will replace the existing steel one, built in the 1960's. The old structure has deteriorated to the point where it failed in 2004. Temporary repairs were made at the time but it is only expected to last for a few more years and would need frequent repairs. The work will meet current Saskatchewan Water Rights regulations.
Work on the project will begin after freeze-up and is expected to be completed in early 2009.
