WORKING WITH THE PRIVATE SECTOR TO OFFER MORE CAMPING

Released on October 10, 2008

An agreement with a private operator means there will soon be multi-year, seasonal campsites available in Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park. The agreement with D and G Golf Enterprize Ltd. is the first of its kind in Saskatchewan. Under it, the company will lease land within the park and spend approximately $900,000 to build a new, privately-run, campground which has 75 campsites with water, electrical and sewer hook-ups.

D and G Golf Enterprize Ltd. currently leases and operates the golf course at Cypress Hills and the new campground is intended to complement that operation. The campground lease will run for 25 years with an option to renew it for an additional 10.

Individual campsites will be available for the public to lease, from the company for a maximum of 10 full seasons. A season runs from April through October. Although camping units will have to be removed at the end of each season, some items may be stored in on-site storage sheds.

"This project will help meet the demand for seasonal camping in Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "It is an example of how working with private operators in our parks can reduce the pressure on existing campsites and improve facilities at no cost to the province. We are also looking into the possibility of similar developments in other provincial parks."

Demand for seasonal camping in Saskatchewan's provincial parks has surpassed the number of available sites. Multi-year camping opportunities are popular in other jurisdictions, especially when the projects meet high aesthetic and operating standards.

"We will soon be marketing Phase I of the project which is 30 campsites, scheduled to be completed by June of 2009," D and G Golf Enterprize Ltd. owner Willie Dejardins said. "Expanding our business in the park to include a long-term seasonal camping opportunity will help meet the needs of tourists visiting Cypress Hills. By doing this we can generate more revenue for the park, make the golf course a viable operation for years to come, and give more people the chance to enjoy the beauty of Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park."

The province currently has a four-year, $20-million program underway to upgrade the provincial parks. It includes adding electrical service to 1,000 park campsites. Park visitors will be able to start using some of the upgraded, regular, campsites next spring.
