MOOSOMIN CELEBRATES OPENING OF INTEGRATED CARE CENTRE

Released on October 7, 2008

Health Minster Don McMorris cut the ribbon today for Moosomin's new integrated health facility, along with local Moosomin MLA Don Toth, Regina Qu'Appelle Regional Health Authority chair Lloyd Boutilier and Moosomin and District Health Care Foundation chair Mark Bateman.

The new 85-bed Southeast Integrated Care Centre - Moosomin includes 58 long-term care beds and 27 in-patient beds. The building replaces Moosomin Union Hospital, Eastern Saskatchewan Pioneer Nursing Home and Eastern Saskatchewan Pioneer Lodge. Community health services are also moving into the centre.

"This is a great day for the Moosomin area," McMorris said. "A multi-purpose facility improves public access to services, and allows better co-ordination between health care teams, while improving continuity in services."

"This truly has been a community effort," Toth said. "People in the Moosomin area have dedicated their time for years to raise funds for this facility.

"Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region staff have worked tirelessly to make sure this facility will meet the health care needs of the community now and in the future," Boutilier said.

The facility was funded by the Government of Saskatchewan and the community of Moosomin and surrounding area. The government contributed $19.95 million. The community raised $10.75 million for the facility and another $1.1 million for furniture and non-medical equipment.

On behalf of the foundation, Bateman thanked the government for its financial and planning support, and the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region for its expertise in managing the construction of the facility.

"The foundation of our new facility is built on community spirit," Bateman said. "Since 2003, we have received over $11 million; $10 million of that was raised over the last five years."

Some of those funds have been raised through community fundraisers such as the Moosomin Moose week-long hockey game, which raised close to $750,000 and made the Guinness Book of World Records; a crop project that raised over $55,000; the Build for Health housing project that raised $30,000; and events such as skate-a-thons and golf tournaments.

Some large donations from local companies and individuals also helped the Foundation reach its fundraising goals. Those donations came from: PotashCorp which made a direct commitment of more than $600,000 and helped raise another $250,000 through a matching community campaign; Conexus Credit Union and the Moosomin Credit Union donated $300,000; Laurence Dennis of Wawota donated $200,000; TransCanada Pipelines donated $200,000; the Kinsmen of Moosomin raised $135,000 through various fundraising events; and the Borderland Co-operative stores of Moosomin, Rocanville and Maryfield provided five years of annual donations for a total of $100,000.

Construction of the 8,747 square metre centre (94,120 square feet) began in July 2006. Finishing touches are still being completed.
