VICTIMS SERVICES FUNDING HELPS MAKE SASKATCHEWAN A SAFER PLACE FOR CHILDREN

Released on November 28, 2008

Today marks the launch of a workshop facilitator's manual entitled, When Children Are Exposed to Violence: Making Their World a Safer Place.

The manual fills a need identified by the Children Who Witness Violence programs in Saskatchewan. It will be the primary resource for a series of workshops about children and youth who have been exposed to violence.

Victims Services, a branch of the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General, provided Catholic Family Services of Saskatoon with a grant of $30,200 to develop and produce the manual and deliver the first 10 workshops in communities around the province. These workshops will offer specialized training to front line professionals working with children and youth who have experienced violence.

"Social responsibility and mutual respect are essential to the well-being of all members of a community," Justice Minister Don Morgan said. "Violence and abuse in any form are unacceptable to me and to the Government of Saskatchewan."

The Children Who Witness Domestic Violence program was developed in 1994 and has grown considerably since that time. The Ministry of Justice and Attorney General will provide more than $400,000 in funding in 2008/09 for delivery of these programs in North Battleford, Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Estevan and Regina. Programs are also being developed in La Ronge and Buffalo Narrows.
