Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart and Crown Corporations Minister Ken Cheveldayoff today said the Government of Saskatchewan is pleased that Bruce Power concluded nuclear power generation could be feasible in Saskatchewan.
"Our government supports adding value to our raw uranium resources here in Saskatchewan to support the long term prosperity of our province and our people," Stewart said. "We will undertake a thorough evaluation of the conditions identified by Bruce Power that would be necessary for a nuclear power plant to be feasible in Saskatchewan and will provide a response to both Bruce Power and the people of Saskatchewan within six months."
In June 2008, Bruce Power President Duncan Hawthorne announced the launch of a feasibility study into the possible role nuclear power could play in Saskatchewan. Mr. Hawthorne released the results of that study concluding nuclear power is viable and said Bruce Power will now consider identifying a specific power plant site and launching a comprehensive Environmental Assessment.
Crown Corporations Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said Saskatchewan requires new supplies of clean power from all available sources including clean coal, hydro, wind and potentially nuclear to meet our provinces growing demand for electricity.
"Our government is encouraged by Bruce Power's conclusion that nuclear power is feasible in Saskatchewan," Cheveldayoff said. "While the government has made no decision with regard to moving forward with nuclear power generation, we would encourage Bruce Power to continue its research into development of nuclear power generation in our province."
In October, the Government of Saskatchewan established the Uranium Development Partnership (UDP) with a mandate to identify, evaluate and make recommendations on opportunities for value added development of our uranium industry. Part of the UDP mandate is an evaluation of nuclear power generation.
Stewart said the UDP will provide a report to Cabinet this spring.
"The UDP report will also be released to the public as the foundation for broad public consultation and public input," Stewart said. "The government will use both the UDP Report and the feedback of Saskatchewan people to make decisions about next steps with regard to further development of the province's uranium industry."
