The Government of Saskatchewan today took a major step toward further enhancing Saskatchewan's competitiveness and productivity by introducing The Innovation Saskatchewan Act.
Once established, Innovation Saskatchewan will act as a special operating agency to focus, co-ordinate and support research activities in the province, with the goal of fostering an innovation-driven economy.
"Saskatchewan has already proven itself as a global competitor and a national economic leader," Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said. "It has been said that the most renewable fuel a society can create is an eco-system of innovation, and this province has a vast reservoir of this particular quality to draw upon. Innovation Saskatchewan is the means of not simply tapping into it, but responsibly managing it, enhancing it and applying it for maximum economic benefit."
Improved links between the research, development and commercialization stages of ideas and technology from Saskatchewan's innovation sector will be one of the key directives of the new agency.
"Innovation Saskatchewan is our chance to partner and build on the excellent work in research and development happening at our academic facilities," Stewart said. "This is an opportunity to move Saskatchewan into a future where the work of our innovation and knowledge infrastructure can extend to further economic benefits for our province."
