PROVINCE CONGRATULATES SWIFT CURRENT AS HOST OF 2010 FORD WORLD WOMEN'S CURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

The Government of Saskatchewan congratulates Swift Current on being chosen to host the 2010 Ford World Women's Curling Championship.

The announcement was made today in Swift Current by the Canadian Curling Association and the World Curling Federation.

"Congratulations to the Swift Current Host Committee, the Swift Current Curling Club, and curlers in Swift Current and southwest Saskatchewan for bringing the 2010 Ford World Women's Curling Championship to our Province," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "This women's curling championship is a great opportunity to show the world what the City of Swift Current and the Province of Saskatchewan have to offer. It is events like this that strengthen communities, grow our tourism sector, and give us the ability to showcase our pride to the world."

The championship takes place March 20 to 28, 2010, with rinks from 12 countries competing.

Canada will have hosted 11 World Women's Curling Championships by 2010, including the event in Swift Current. Canada has won 15 women's titles since the first championship was held in Perth, Scotland in 1979.

Curling has a rich history in this province. Saskatchewan rinks that have been world female champions were:

1980 - Marj Mitchell, Nancy Kerr, Shirley McKendry, Wendy Leach (Regina)
1993, 1994, 1997 - Sandra Schmirler, Jan Betker, Joan McCusker, Marcia Gudereit (Regina)
