Starting today, gift cards in Saskatchewan will no longer be allowed to have expiry dates.
The Consumer Protection Amendment Act, 2008 that was passed in the spring session of the Legislature takes effect today, November 10. In addition to prohibiting expiry dates on gift cards and gift certificates (including those for specific services rather than dollar amounts) the legislation bans inactivity or dormancy fees from being imposed.
Justice Minister Don Morgan made the announcement today at an event in Saskatoon.
"Gift cards are a multi-billion dollar industry and, one of the fastest growing products in the marketplace today," Morgan said. "It is important that consumers be protected from the loss of value of the cards that results with expiry dates and purchase and activity fees. Our Saskatchewan Party government is pleased to have put in place very strong legislation that compares favourably with other provinces."
The ban on expiry dates and fees takes effect immediately.
