The community of Oxbow celebrated today when Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz announced government funding of approximately $9.5 million for a new K-12 school for the community. South East Cornerstone School Division will provide the remaining funds for the project with a total cost estimated at $17 million.
"The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to support the community of Oxbow by investing in your young people as we ensure a stronger Saskatchewan and a better life for all through investments in education," Krawetz said. "The new school will provide a safer, more accessible environment and will include more appropriately designed space for educational programming, which in turn will improve student achievement."
"On behalf of the Board of Education and staff, I would like to express our appreciation to Minister Krawetz and his Government for the injection of new infrastructure funding to allow for this long awaited project to move forward," South East Cornerstone School Division board chair Audrey Trombley said. "It is imperative that we are able to provide a safe, healthy and modern learning environment for the students and staff to achieve optimum results from educational programming."
The new school will replace Oxbow Elementary School, Oxbow Prairie Heights School and Glenn McGuire School bringing all of the community's students together under one roof. The new school project is expected to break ground in spring 2009.
"It is exciting and comforting to know that future students will have a brand new facility to attend," Student Representative Council member Renee Boutin said. "A new building means a more positive and enjoyable place for students to come to every day. The investment in this school is really an investment in our future."
The Oxbow school capital project is part of the Government of Saskatchewan's Ready for Growth commitment of over $117 million in 2008-09 for strengthening existing schools and new construction. An additional $60 million was announced later in the year for projects that will begin in 2009.
