$2 MILLION PROVIDED FOR NUTRITION FUNDING AT COMMUNITY SCHOOLS

Released on May 29, 2008

Education Minister Ken Krawetz announced $2 million in nutrition funding over four years for schools during a visit today to Riverside Community School in Prince Albert.

"Research indicates that improved nutrition supports children's readiness to learn, which in turn potentially increases student achievement," Krawetz said. "This initiative is a very important investment to assist vulnerable children who attend community schools."

Hunger has been documented as a barrier to learning. It can affect students' educational experiences which in turn can compromise their opportunities for success in school and later in life.

"With children now making up almost half of food bank users, our government believes that action needs to be taken to reduce child hunger in Saskatchewan," Krawetz said. "Healthy nutrition programs in our community schools are one of the many ways we can work toward supporting and addressing the complex needs of students. This nutrition funding will be used for school lunch and anti-hunger programs."

"The Saskatchewan Community Schools Association is very pleased about the announcement," Saskatchewan Community Schools Association president Delphine Melchert said. "We all share the dream of a future where food security is a reality for all students and their families. This support will have a positive impact in community schools across the Province."

"Today's Saskatchewan is vibrant, full of prosperity and opportunity," Krawetz said. "By working together to address food security within our great province, we will secure a bright future for all students."
