2007 COUNCIL OF THE FEDERATION LITERACY AWARD PRESENTED

Released on May 27, 2008

Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz presented Colleen Christopherson-Cote with the 2007 Council of the Federation (COF) Literacy Award in Coronach this evening.

This award recognizes outstanding achievements and excellence in literacy. The COF Literacy Award is presented annually in each province and territory across Canada and unfortunately due to scheduling delays, Ms. Christopherson-Cote was unable to receive her award during 2007.

"I am pleased to congratulate Ms. Christopherson-Cote as the 2007 COF Award recipient and applaud her outstanding contributions as a literacy leader," Premier Brad Wall said. "Her work and achievements within Saskatchewan's literacy community illustrate the importance of literacy as an essential building block for our province's growing society and economy."

"Ms. Christopherson-Cote has been instrumental in implementing many literacy programs within the Coronach community, including the Little Tykes Preschool, Reading Circles program at the school and in the library, Peer Tutoring Program for Youth, Computers for Seniors, Seniors' Books on Wheels and on-line training courses for adults," Krawetz said. "I applaud her dedication and commitment."

Ms. Christopherson-Cote first became involved in community literacy work in Saskatchewan in 1998. After moving to Coronach in 2003, she joined the Coronach Palliser Library Board and quickly became a driving force within the organization. She played a major role in establishing the Prairie Literacy Awareness Network (PLAN) in 2006 and developing a community literacy plan to respond to local literacy programming needs.

The COF Literacy Award recognizes the valuable contributions made by Canadians in the field of literacy, including family, Aboriginal, health, workplace and community literacy. Each award recipient receives a certificate as well as a Council of the Federation Literacy Award medallion.
