MINING WEEK CELEBRATES INDUSTRY EXCELLENCE

Released on May 26, 2008

Saskatchewan's mining industry is red-hot these days, and its successes are being showcased during Mining Week in Saskatchewan, May 25 to 31.

This year's theme of "Mining . . . Great for Saskatchewan and the World" underscores the growing recognition of the province and its mining industry to global energy supply.

"Saskatchewan is a province that is energy-rich and resource-full," Energy and Resources Minister Bill Boyd said today. "Mining Week is the perfect time for us to celebrate an industry that is helping drive our economy, and in the process rewriting the record books of success."

Mining is Saskatchewan's third largest industry, employing 25,000 people directly and indirectly. Value of Saskatchewan mineral sales last year was a record $4.6 billion.

Saskatchewan is the world's largest producer of uranium and potash, and has excellent potential in many minerals, including base metals, gold, diamonds and rare earth elements. Mineral exploration expenditures this year are an estimated $360 million, a fifteen fold increase over the figure for 2001.

The Saskatchewan Mining Association co-ordinates Mining Week events. President, Bruce Lambert, said the week provides the industry a chance to reflect on its proud heritage and bright future.

"Mining is a key engine of economic growth in our province, providing billions of dollars each year in wages, goods and services as well as revenue to the provincial government," Lambert said. "The rapid growth of our industry is creating many opportunities for the youth of our province - our workforce of tomorrow - in more than 120 different skilled trades and professions."

A variety of mining-related events are scheduled throughout Mining Week, culminating in the 40th annual Emergency Response and Mine Rescue Competition to be held May 31 in Saskatoon.
