GOVERNMENT HOUSE GROUNDS REHABILITATION GETS UNDERWAY

Released on May 22, 2008

You might notice increased activity at Government House beginning this weekend as the grounds undergo rehabilitation. Trees and shrubs are being trimmed and thinned throughout the site to renew the plant life as part of the rehabilitation project and in preparation for a special announcement at the Lieutenant Governor's Garden Party.

"Plans are coming together for the Lieutenant Governor's Garden Party at Government House," Lieutenant Governor Dr. Gordon Barnhart said. "Naomi and I are looking forward to greeting guests at this inaugural celebration on July 1, and sharing some exciting surprises."

The rehabilitation of the existing foliage is the next step in completing the Government House Centennial Project which now includes the original Edwardian garden design.

"We are excited to begin preparations for this important announcement," Provincial Secretary Wayne Elhard said. "Continuing the development of the grounds of this unique heritage site will increase the accessibility and enjoyment of Government House and its history for families, students and tourists alike."

Previous changes to Government House include a visitor and educational centre, and an interpretive centre featuring the role of the Lieutenant Governor, the history of the Crown and governance in Saskatchewan. More details of the ground rehabilitation will be announced July 1, 2008.

The grounds, as well as Government House are a National Historic Site and a Provincial Heritage Property. Approximately 26,000 people on average visit Government House each year.
