$20,000 GRADUATE RETENTION PROGRAM LAUNCHED

Released on May 21, 2008

Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris officially launched the most aggressive youth retention program in Canada at the University of Regina today. The legislation for the program was enacted into law last week and now the Ministry has started a marketing campaign to ensure that young people know about the program, which offers financial incentives for graduates to stay and work in Saskatchewan.

"The Graduate Retention Program will help the province retain our skilled and educated graduates," Norris said. "By rebating tuition for graduates, the program reinforces that Saskatchewan is the place to be!"

"Anything that provides a strong incentive for students to enroll in Saskatchewan post-secondary institutions, complete their education and remain in the province to build their careers is a welcome initiative," University of Regina president Jim Tomkins said. "The Graduate Retention Program looks like it will go a long way to help meet these objectives."

"Students across Saskatchewan are excited about the Graduate Retention Program insofar as it provides us with yet another incentive to stay in our fine province," FNUniv student association communications vice president Thomas Roussin said. "Coupled with increased funding at the entry level it is our hope that programs such as this will allow Saskatchewan to attain a position as one of Canada's most affordable and excellent places to live, work and go to school."

Keeping skilled and educated young people in Saskatchewan is essential to maintain the momentum of the growing economy and to support the continuing shift to a knowledge-based economy. The estimated 9,000 graduates who will receive a Graduate Retention Program Certificate every year will have a strong incentive to start their career in Saskatchewan. The tuition rebates are as high as $20,000 over seven years. Certificates for 2006, 2007 and 2008 graduates will be issued in time for calculating returns for the 2008 tax year.

For most graduates, there is no need to apply for a certificate, since the lists of graduates are provided to the Ministry by Saskatchewan post-secondary institutions. Program information will be included in university convocation packages and is being distributed this week to all Saskatchewan post-secondary institutions. The marketing campaign includes advertising in newspapers and online in places such as Facebook and MSN. Information is also available at the program web site: http://www.aeel.gov.sk.ca/grp.
