PROVINCIAL PARKS PLAYING HOST TO THE 2008 DAVID THOMPSON BRIGADE IN MAY

Released on May 12, 2008

Visitors to Fort Pitt Provincial Park and Fort Carlton Provincial Park in May are invited to take part in the festivities surrounding the 2008 David Thompson Brigade.

The David Thompson Brigade is a group of over 160 people paddling canoes on a 3,600 kilometre voyage from Rocky Mountain House to Thunder Bay. The voyage is being undertaken to commemorate the bicentennial of geographer David Thompson's 1808 trip.

"The network of Saskatchewan Provincial Parks provides not only excellent recreational sites for Saskatchewan residents and tourists, but abundant interpretive and educational opportunities as well," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "The David Thompson Brigade overnight stops will be an enjoyable experience for park visitors."

The David Thompson Brigade will be arriving at Fort Pitt Provincial Park for an overnight stay on May 19. Events are being developed by Saskatchewan Parks Service in conjunction with the Frenchman Butte Historical Society and the Fort Pitt Farms.

On the evening of May 23, the Brigade will arrive at Fort Carlton Provincial Park. Events to mark their arrival include day-long and evening Voyageur camp demonstrations by the students from Pinehouse school, as well as the ongoing tipi encampment demonstration by the Beardy's and Okemasis First Nations. Visitors are invited to bring a lawn chair along and enjoy the day.

David Thompson, a surveyor and fur trader, is known as one of Canada's greatest geographers. Over his career he mapped over 3.9 million square kilometres of the North American continent and is responsible for many of the early maps of Western Canada.
