NEW BEGINNING FOR FIRST NATIONS, MÉTIS, INDUSTRY AND GOVERNMENT

Released on May 12, 2008

"We are here working together, learning how to live in harmony and that is what our ancestors wanted,'' First Nations Elder Alma Kytwayhat said as she opened the Roundtable Conference on First Nation and Métis Consultation and Accommodation with her prayer.

Nearly 500 First Nations and Métis leaders, industry representatives and government officials gathered at the Saskatoon Inn for an historic two-day conference. This is double the number of participants that were expected.

"I don't think we can stress enough that this is a new, historic beginning," Premier Brad Wall said. "We are seeking common ground and the point is that this is a beginning of a longer process."

"It took the government of Saskatchewan and the federal government to finally realize that the Duty to Consult was actually in place 132 years ago when Treaty was signed...So today leaders, government people, I do believe the Creator has given us a second chance to do it right this time," Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Chief Lawrence Joseph said.

"We are related, we are family... working together, Métis and First Nations, will ensure our families, our communities and our nation's future will be clear and prosperous," Métis Nation - Saskatchewan Robert Doucette said. "Simply put, we need each other."

Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce President Dale Lemke said he is optimistic this meeting will take us into a new era.

Governments have a legal requirement to consult with First Nations and Métis people when their decisions or activities could potentially impact Treaty or Aboriginal rights.

The roundtable continues tomorrow with dialogue sessions which will allow the participants to give their input on specific questions related to consultation and accommodation.

Day two of the conference is closed to the media until 2:15 p.m. when we invite journalists back for the roundtable recap of the day and closing remarks. First Nations and Métis Relation Minister June Draude will officially close the roundtable with remarks on next steps.
