CALL FOR LITERACY AWARD NOMINATIONS

Released on May 9, 2008

Premier Brad Wall is encouraging Saskatchewan residents to put forward nominations for this year's Council of the Federation (COF) Literacy award. This annual award, created four years ago, recognizes outstanding achievement, innovation and excellence with regard to literacy in Saskatchewan.

"By recognizing a literacy leader, we are celebrating and acknowledging the great work being done at the grass-roots level," Wall said. "Our government understands that literacy is the key foundation for lifelong learning and full participation of all people in society. Today's prosperous Saskatchewan requires a highly literate and skilled workforce."

In 2004, the COF Literacy Award was established in partnership with all of Canada's premiers to increase awareness of literacy achievements, services and programs. This award focuses on achievements in the literacy field, including family, aboriginal, health, workplace and community literacy. It is presented to specific sectors such as volunteers, learners, community organizations and businesses.

The selection committee consists of representatives from Saskatchewan's literacy community, Executive Council and the Ministry of Education. The Saskatchewan recipient of the COF Literacy Award will be announced with Literacy Award recipients from Canada's other provincial territorial jurisdictions at the Premiers' Annual Summer meeting in Quebec. Premier Wall will present the chosen recipient with their award this fall.

Nominations for this award will be accepted until May 30, 2008. To nominate an outstanding literacy leader, visit http://www.sasked.gov.sk.ca/sasksmart/news/premier_award.htm.
