Three economic indicators released over the last week show Saskatchewan tops the nation in percentage growth.
Retail sales figures for January out today and wholesale trade and international export value reports for January released last Wednesday all give Saskatchewan the number one spot in the nation when it comes to percentage growth.
"These indicators are positive news for the Saskatchewan economy," Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said. "Our economy is stronger than it has ever been, and we want to make sure we keep it that way."
Retail sales for January 2008 were 15.8 per cent higher than January 2007, and the highest growth rate in the nation. In January, retail sales totalled nearly $1 billion dollars (seasonally-unadjusted).
The value of international exports was up by 29.8 per cent year-over-year to $2 billion, the fastest growth rate of any province. This compares with a national rate that dropped by 8.9 per cent in January.
Wholesale trade figures in the province were up by 17.5 per cent to $1.2 billion in January. This compared to a national increase of only 3.1 per cent.
"With Saskatchewan achieving one of the best economic records in the nation, it is clear we need a plan that is sustainable and makes sense," Stewart said. "I am confident that with last week's budget and the work of Enterprise Saskatchewan, we will have the foundation to continue the economic momentum we are enjoying.
