March 21st is International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
In recognition of this special occasion, First Nations and Métis Relations Minister June Draude and Justice Minister and Attorney General Don Morgan are urging Saskatchewan residents to celebrate diversity.
"Saskatchewan's First Nations and Métis people have rich traditions and rich cultures, which strengthen our communities and our Province," Draude said. "I invite all Saskatchewan people to welcome these differences, reject all forms of racial discrimination and work toward a common future built on respect and understanding."
"Racism prevents individuals and groups from achieving their potential," Morgan said. "It limits participation in democracy and it inhibits social cohesion and order. We must work together to make our communities inhospitable for racist attitudes. We must build a shared future that is free from discrimination and founded on mutual trust and respect."
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1966. Each year on this date, events are held throughout the world drawing attention to the harmful impacts of racial discrimination. The events encourage people to embrace respect, equality and diversity which contribute to racial harmony.
"Embracing diversity is part of this Province's multicultural heritage and recognized in our provincial motto, From Many Peoples' Strength," Draude said.
