GOVERNMENT SCRAPS “WIENER ROAST TAX”

Released on March 17, 2008

Campfire permit fees will officially be eliminated in Saskatchewan parks effective April 1, saving park goers about $375,000 annually.

"We never agreed with the previous government introducing this, a wiener roast tax and neither did Saskatchewan campers," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "We promised Saskatchewan people we'd get rid of it - and now we have."

The $3 per day fee to purchase firewood in Saskatchewan parks was implemented in 2004.

"We want people to come to our beautiful parks - not give them a reason to stay away," Tell said. "It was ridiculous to charge park goers for their campfire enjoyment. We're pleased to officially scrap this fee, and no new park fees are being introduced." The government also released a number of other changes to various fees and services in advance of Wednesday's provincial budget.

These changes will occur in 2008-09, which will result in a $158,400 increase in revenue for the General Revenue Fund (GRF) this year. Annual impact is estimated at approximately $650,000. Changes are primarily cost-recovery.
