CELEBRATING REDA WEEK IN THE PROVINCE - MARCH 16 TO 22

The week of March 16 to 22 has been proclaimed REDA week in Saskatchewan to celebrate the achievements of the Regional Economic Development Authorities (REDAs) in the province.

There are 27 REDAs in Saskatchewan that promote and develop strategies to encourage economic growth. The organizations work in partnership with communities, local governments, businesses, co-operatives, youth and Aboriginal groups.

"Economic development is all about leadership," Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said. "REDAs have been instrumental in building partnerships and creating opportunities to strengthen local economies and we celebrate their achievements. I have asked REDAs to play a significant role as part of Enterprise Saskatchewan and their high performance will be very important in the future economic development of our province."

REDAs are currently involved in 60 projects and 145 initiatives. Over the past five years REDA projects and initiatives have yielded investments totalling nearly $180 million, created 471 jobs and maintained 397 jobs.

"In addition to the projects that REDAs undertake, one of their important roles has been facilitating a redefinition of 'community' - now seen as something bigger than your local municipality," Mainline REDA general manager Larry Lang said. "When a region is strong, the communities within it are strong, and as the region strengthens so do the communities."

During REDA week, the Saskatchewan Economic Development Association will host the "Collaboration in the New Economy" conference to encourage further collaboration between communities and regions to capitalize on economic opportunities.
