PROVINCE INVESTS IN SEED VARIETY TESTING

Released on March 14, 2008

Saskatchewan Agriculture has provided a $100,000 grant for regional seed variety testing.

The grant will allow the Saskatchewan Variety Performance Group to continue the variety testing program, now in its fourth year of operation. The funding will be provided to SeCan Association, which administers the funds on behalf of the program.

"I am pleased to provide support for seed variety testing," Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud said. "This investment will help producers make valuable cropping decisions and help them maximize productivity from their land."

The regional variety testing program provides grain growers with an independent source of information on different varieties of crops. The purpose is to assist producers in selecting the best varieties for their farming operation.

The regional variety testing program is also partially funded by an entry fee paid by the distributor of each variety. The combined funds cover the costs of variety trials at numerous locations across Saskatchewan.

Crops in the regional variety testing program include wheat, barley, oats and flax. However, the grant from the Ministry of Agriculture also provides support to organizations that test varieties of other crops, including canola, sunflowers, canary seed and pulse crops.

Regional variety testing program results are published annually in Varieties of Grain Crops, a publication available on Saskatchewan Agriculture's website at http://www.agriculture.gov.sk.ca/. Producers can also obtain a copy by contacting the Agriculture Knowledge Centre at 1-866-457-2377.
