UNITED EMPIRE LOYALISTS DAY CELEBRATED

Released on June 19, 2008

The province has designated June 19 as United Empire Loyalists Day in Saskatchewan.

During the American Revolution, more than 70,000 American colonists, who were loyal to the British Empire, left their homes to resettle in eastern Canada. Many Loyalists later moved westward and were among the first settlers to arrive in Saskatchewan.

"This day is an opportunity to recognize the contribution those loyal to British North America made in creating what is now Canada," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "Understanding the history of those Loyalists from the Thirteen Colonies is crucial to understand what it means to be Canadian."

The Regina Branch of the United Empire Loyalists Association of Canada plans to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the forced exile of those people from the Thirteen Colonies by gathering at the cairn on the Legislative Grounds in Regina for a program followed by a reception in the lower level of the Legislative Building.

"The United Empire Loyalists brought a distinctive cultural identity with them when they began to settle in Canada more than 225 years ago," Tell said. "Saskatchewan is richer for the heritage that Loyalists and their descendents have contributed to our culturally diverse province."
