PROVINCE ALLOCATES $2.55 MILLION TO REGINA IPSCO PLACE

Released on June 11, 2008

Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell announced today a $2.55 million allocation from the province to the City of Regina for the IPSCO Place revitalization project.

The allocation is conditional pending a successful agreement between IPSCO Place and the federal government for the project.

Combined with the $17.45 million already committed to the IPSCO project from the Building Communities Program, this additional $2.55 million allocation brings the total provincial contribution to the project to $20 million.

"The improvement to IPSCO Place means new and exciting things for people in Saskatchewan," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "A new multi-purpose facility will take the momentum that we've built up and bring in people from across the West and beyond. By hosting a number of large scale events that contribute to the province's tourism industry, IPSCO Place is a major economic driver in the province."

"IPSCO Place is a focal point for the surrounding neighbourhoods, and its renewal plan will enhance the positive impact it has on area residents, the entire community and province," Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco said. "The City of Regina is pleased to continue to work with our provincial and federal government partners to re-develop IPSCO Place. Projects like the multi-purpose arena are an excellent example of what can be achieved by working together as a community."

The new multiplex will help support the province's sport and recreational sectors by providing accessible and modern facilities. This facility will be a key anchor for sports, entertainment, trade and business in Regina.

Regina IPSCO Place's new multi-purpose facility will include five new ice surfaces and one new show arena, as well as upgrades to the Brandt Centre. The City of Regina expects construction on the multiplex to begin in 2008 and be completed in 2010.
