MAIDSTONE CELEBRATES EXPANDED HEALTH COMPLEX

Released on June 10, 2008

Maidstone and area residents took part in the opening ceremony for the Maidstone Health Complex today, as Health Minister Don McMorris, community leaders, health officials, residents and staff of the new facility cut the ribbon for the expanded building.

The $13.94 million project includes addition of new long-term care wing to replace the Pine Island Lodge nursing home building, renovations to the Maidstone Hospital, and addition of space to house community health services.

"This expanded and integrated health facility is an example of the maintenance, renovations and construction that is badly needed to deal with the infrastructure deficit in Saskatchewan's health system," McMorris said.

"The new facility strengthens the delivery of health care for Maidstone and area residents into the future," Prairie North Regional Health Authority chairperson Bonnie O'Grady said. "This move integrates health services and the human and physical resources available in the community, and improves access to the care that patients and clients need in a single location."

Community health services moved into the new facility in December 2007, followed by long-term care residents from the outdated Pine Island Lodge nursing home in February 2008, completing integration of the Maidstone area's health services into a single facility. The improved long-term care living quarters and common areas can accommodate 24 residents with two additional respite rooms.

Improvements to the 11-bed acute care section include special equipment for safely handling heavy patients, a room with infection control features and a palliative care room with an adjoining room for family members.

Moving all services under one roof allows greater collaboration and information sharing among health care teams. Community services including home care, public health nursing and counselling for addictions, mental health, and nutrition are just a few steps away from the long-term care area, the emergency room and other acute health care services.
