$1.2 MILLION FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO NORQUAY SCHOOL

Released on June 6, 2008

Education Minister Ken Krawetz today joined students and staff to celebrate the government's commitment of an additional $1.2 million to the first phase of the Norquay School Project. This brings the Government share of the project to $1.7 million with the total estimated cost of the project at $2.6 million.

"This investment exemplifies the benefits of the Ready for Growth initiative that is helping us grow our economy, improve our quality of life and take pride in where we live," Krawetz said. "The renovated Norquay School will strengthen the education opportunities for the town's young people and the community in which they live and grow."

"The announcement of the Norquay School capital project is an exciting time for Norquay and the local school community," Good Spirit School Division Board vice-chair Bryan Cottenie said. "As the needs of our student population evolve, the newly renovated facility ensures we are able to meet those requirements. This announcement ensures strong foundations are in place for our students to learn and grow in a safe environment."

The first phase of the renovated Norquay School will see the two-story high school section of the school, which was originally constructed in 1952, be replaced with three new classrooms, a science lab, student washrooms, storage and room for a future performing and visual arts program. The unfinished space, along with the relocation of the existing home economics area will be completed as part of phase two of the project. In October of 2007, $500,000 was provided to enlarge educational programming space in the school.

The Government of Saskatchewan committed $117.6 million in this year's budget for kindergarten to Grade 12 school improvements as part of the Ready for Growth initiative. Additional funding of $60.3 million was announced this spring that will support six more school improvement projects in 2009 and two in 2010.
