Nutana Collegiate celebrated today when Education Minister Ken Krawetz visited the Saskatoon school to announce $8.5 million in government funding for school improvements. The capital project will expand instructional space, upgrade the school's mechanical and electrical services and improve accessibility.
"Improving our province's schools helps us grow our economy, improve our quality of life and take pride in where we live," Krawetz said. "This investment exemplifies the benefits of the Saskatchewan government's Ready for Growth initiative. More importantly, these improvements strengthen the learning opportunities that will help improve student achievement for young people at Nutana Collegiate and the community in which they live and grow."
"Nutana Collegiate celebrates its centenary in 2010 and this financial commitment from the Government of Saskatchewan means the oldest collegiate in Saskatoon will continue on in its role as a vital part of our family of public schools and the community," Saskatoon Public School Division board chair Ray Morrison said. "Our school division inspires learning and the rich history and proud heritage of Nutana will continue to be an inspiration to students over this century."
The total project cost is $13.5 million. Tendering for the first phase of the project is expected to go ahead in early 2009 with improvements to begin in July 2009.
The Nutana Collegiate project is part of the Government of Saskatchewan's Ready for Growth commitment of $117.6 million for kindergarten to Grade 12 school capital including nine major and 36 block funding projects. An additional eight major capital projects were also announced May 13, including an estimated $60.3 million to support six projects in 2009 and two in 2010.
