A plaque recognizing the Honeywood Nursery located 6.5 kilometres southwest of Parkside as a Provincial Heritage Property was unveiled on July 20, by the Government of Saskatchewan.
"The Honeywood Nursery is an integral part of the history of horticulture in Saskatchewan, the prairies provinces and Canada," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "It is also one of the few original nurseries that remain in Saskatchewan and indeed an important addition to our provincial heritage properties."
The Honeywood Nursery is one of 49 provincially designated heritage sites. Saskatchewan's Heritage Property Act ensures that the province's irreplaceable and non-renewable heritage is protected and preserved for the benefit of Saskatchewan residents.
A.J. (Bert) Porter was a pioneering plant breeder whose contributions to the development of horticulture in Saskatchewan and the Prairie provinces have been recognized by numerous Saskatchewan, Canadian and international organizations. In breeding and developing hardy small fruits and high quality disease-resistant lilies, Porter helped beautify the yards of farms and residences throughout Saskatchewan and in so doing, helped improve our quality of life.
