SASKATCHEWAN LEADS THE WAY IN EMPLOYMENT QUALITY: CIBC WORLD MARKETS

Released on July 16, 2008

Fresh on the heels of praise on the pages of Fortune Magazine, Saskatchewan's red-hot job market has been lauded by a major Canadian institution.

According to CIBC World Markets' Canadian Employment Quality Index, Saskatchewan has strongly outpaced the rest of Canada in terms of employment quality. CIBC combined information on the distribution of part-time vs. full-time jobs; self-employment vs. paid employment; and the compensation ranking of full-time paid employment jobs in more than 100 industry groups.

"Once again, we're seeing clear evidence that Saskatchewan people are benefiting from our province's unprecedented economic growth," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "More people than ever are finding prosperity in Saskatchewan and our economy continues to produce high-quality career opportunities."

According to the report, the province's lead was "fuelled by strong job gains in agriculture, energy extraction and mining exploration and developments, where earnings run anywhere from 50 per cent to 125 per cent above the industrial average".

"We're working hard on the supply and demand sides of the labour market equation to ensure that even more Saskatchewan people can seize these opportunities; and that the conditions are right for employers to continue to create them," Norris said. "This work is a critical component of sustaining our province's economic momentum over the long term."
