Minister of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Darryl Hickie today released this statement on the recent northern forest fire evacuations.
"Today I offer my appreciation to the many people and organizations who worked together to ensure the safe evacuation and return of more than 2,500 northern residents whose communities were threatened by fire and smoke from area forest fires," Hickie said. "While fire fighters from the Ministry of Environment worked to contain the fires, others from the Ministries of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing, Social Services, Highways and Infrastructure, Health, SaskTel and SaskPower worked tirelessly to ensure that decisions were made and actions taken to secure the safety of individuals from the evacuated communities and their property."
Recognition must go to many organizations and individuals outside the provincial government: Public Safety Canada, the RCMP, Manitoba's Emergency Measures Organization, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, St. John's Ambulance, firefighters from Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec and the Northwest Territories, City of Saskatoon, City of Regina, University of Saskatchewan, University of Regina, Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, First Nations University, Prince Albert Grand Council, Wal-Mart, the Regina Science Centre, TCU Place, Prince Albert Northern Bus Lines, Jackson Air Service, North West Airlines, Best Western Inn, Northwood Hotel, Ramada Hotel, Saskatoon Soccer Centre, Twin River Tours, Costco, Cameco, Flaman Investigation and Security, Canadian Corp. of Commissionaires, Handyman Rentals, Saskatoon Correctional Centre, Saskatoon Transit, Rob Clarke, M.P., Saskatoon Public Library, Transwest Air, Home Depot, Roxy Theatre, Family Services Saskatoon, White Buffalo Youth Lodge, Saskatoon Star Phoenix, Saskatoon Forestry Farm, and Sutherland Laundromat and Drycleaning. If anybody involved in the evacuation was missed, our sincerest apologies. Your participation underscores the importance of erasing borders and boundaries in a public emergency so that mutual efforts can achieve a single goal.
"Finally, I would like to thank the people of Stony Rapids, Sandy Bay, Pelican Narrows, Black Lake, Uranium City and Deschambault Lake for your patience and co-operation," Hickie said. "Fewer situations create as much upset as needing to leave your home, your friends and other family members for unfamiliar surroundings.
"Situations such as the forest fire evacuations test the systems we have in place for response to large-scale emergencies. Where we truly make our mark is in the way so many individuals and organizations respond so quickly to secure the communities at risk, and to ensuring the people in them are safe. This is a true measure of leadership, commitment and courage, and on behalf of the Province, I extend my sincere appreciation."
