Hockey Canada selected Saskatchewan to host the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation World Under 20 Championship. The Government of Saskatchewan wishes to express its enthusiasm and congratulate the Saskatchewan Bid Committee.
Hockey Canada made the announcement earlier today. The 2010 World Junior Hockey Championship Games will be held in Saskatoon, Regina and other communities from December 22, 2009 to January 5, 2010.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for the province to demonstrate our hospitality and genuine love of sport," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "This championship will generate significant economic benefits for the province and will showcase Saskatchewan on the world stage."
The championship is anticipated to generate more than $24.6 million in economic activity in the province and over $2.4 million in provincial tax revenue. When Saskatchewan hosted the Juno Awards in 2007, they generated $9.4 million in economic activity.
The Government of Saskatchewan is providing $3 million towards the operational costs of the event. In addition, all levels of government are committed to a profit guarantee of $12.5 million, of which the provincial government is responsible for $8.9 million. Historically, ticket sales have been very strong and the loan guarantee amount is projected to be surpassed.
"While Regina and Saskatoon will host the major championship games, we plan to engage communities throughout the province with exhibition games to be held in a number of centres," Tell said. "In this way all Saskatchewan people will benefit from the province being selected to host the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championship."
The World Junior Hockey Championship is an annual event organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation.
