SCN SERIES NOMINATED FOR NATIONAL AWARD

Released on January 28, 2008

SCN is proud to announce that two made in Saskatchewan television shows, Redemption SK and Flight From Darkness have been nominated for the Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA) Indie Awards.

"I am proud that a Saskatchewan broadcaster was able to help make these shows possible and congratulate the producers, cast and crew on these prestigious nominations," Minister responsible for SCN Christine Tell said.

Redemption SK Producer Sandhya Padmanabh of Lasa Media Arts in Regina is nominated in the "Best Mini-Series" category while Don and Lynne Beck Copeman of Alta Nova Productions also in Regina were nominated in the "Best Documentary" category.

"SCN was the only broadcaster that recognised the potential for this series and then got behind us and financed it," Padmanabh said. "We're all really amazed by the nomination, especially since the budget for Redemption SK was a fraction of what the other shows in the category cost."

Redemption SK was shot in various locations around Saskatchewan with an all-Saskatchewan cast and crew. The production employed an innovative approach to filmmaking, eschewing the large crews and technical support that most films enjoy. The actors were given exceptional latitude in developing and interpreting their characters on-screen and scenes were shot on location using natural or existing light. Actors supplied their own wardrobe and went without makeup. This approach is a variation on the style known as "Dogme" established by its European pioneer, filmmaker Lars Von Trier.

"We are really honoured to be nominated for the Indie Awards, Copeman said. This affirms the solid work that Saskatchewan producers have been creating for years and it's gratifying to be recognised at a national level."

Flight from Darkness premieres on March 27 at 8 pm on SCN. Redemption SK will be available soon as streamed video at www.scn.ca/stream.

The Indie awards were created by the CFTPA in order to recognize and honour the outstanding achievements of Canadian independent producers. The Awards will be presented at a special reception and ceremony in Ottawa on February 20, 2008.

SCN is Saskatchewan's Storyteller, reaching 90 per cent of Saskatchewan households. As Saskatchewan's public educational broadcaster, SCN delivers commercial-free stories that celebrate our culture and connect the people of our province.

The CFTPA is a non-profit trade organization that works on behalf of almost 400 companies engaged in the production and distribution of English-language television programs, feature films and interactive media products in all regions of Canada.
