CASINO REGINA IDENTIFIES MISSING FUNDS

Released on January 24, 2008

Casino Regina has recovered over $13,000 in funds wrongfully taken by patrons using an incorrectly loaded self-redemption kiosk, and has taken preventative measures to ensure the situation is not repeated.

Self-redemption kiosks are used to redeem electronic slot tickets and break large bills. The incident occurred when a cassette meant for $5 bills was loaded with $20 bills. This meant that every time a patron should have received $5, they received $20.

"Many patrons used the machine repeatedly and either knowingly or unknowingly took money which was not theirs, which totalled $27,500," Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation vice president of Corporate Affairs Bill Davies said. "Through our surveillance footage we were able to identify and contact some of those who took money, and to date we have recovered $13,400."

All persons identified as being involved with the offence received exclusion bans from Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation properties. The matter has been turned over to the Regina Police Service for investigation, and legal counsel has been notified.

"We are seeking a legal opinion on whether to use civil action to recover the remaining money that was wilfully taken," Davies said. "We have resolved the problem that resulted in the loss, and are taking steps to ensure this does not happen again. We are taking this matter extremely seriously."

Changes include permanently labelling bill cassettes and exploring other technical enhancements to help prevent a recurrence.

Casino Regina will continue to review all internal processes to meet the highest standards of integrity and all regulatory standards.
