Saskatchewan ended 2007 by setting two new records on the job front according to Statistics Canada Labour Report for December 2007.
In 2007, there were more people working on an average annual basis than ever before in the province. The second record was set for employment numbers for the month of December.
Statistics Canada year-end job numbers released today show that on average, 501,800 people were employed in the province last year, breaking the previous record of 491,600 set in 2006. This is the first time the yearly employment level has reached the half a million mark in our province's history, and marks the fifth straight year job numbers have set a record compared to the previous year.
"Last year was a good year for the Saskatchewan economy, and things will only get better in 2008," Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said. "Our new government will build on the solid job numbers set in 2007, and put in place initiatives to improve on those figures."
Aside from the annual record, job numbers for the month of December 2007 were at record levels. There were 499,100 people employed in the province last month (seasonally unadjusted), breaking the old record of 497,300 set in December 2006. Job numbers have hit record monthly levels for the last 21 months.
"This next year is an exciting one for our new government," Stewart said. "Although the job figures released today are great news, I believe we can do better, and look forward to working with business and other partners through Enterprise Saskatchewan to create even more jobs in 2008."
