WALL SAYS SUSTAINING ECONOMIC MOMENTUM KEY ISSUE AT MEETINGS IN OTTAWA

Released on January 10, 2008

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall travels to Ottawa today for meetings with the Prime Minister and his provincial counterparts. Wall said a key issue at these meetings is finding ways to sustain current economic growth in Saskatchewan and across western Canada.

"Saskatchewan and the New West are driving significant economic growth - growth that presents opportunities not just for the people who live here, but for everyone in Canada," Wall said.

"There needs to be national policies that sustain and solidify this growth."

Wall said concerns about the high Canadian dollar, likely to be a focal point in these meetings, are shared in Saskatchewan since the high dollar is also causing difficulties across economic sectors and specifically in agriculture.

"However, we also need to pay attention to what is needed to ensure the current economic momentum can be transformed into lasting prosperity," Wall said.

While in Ottawa Friday, Premier Wall will meet first with his provincial counterparts at a gathering of the Council of the Federation. Then Wall will join his colleagues in an evening gathering of First Ministers with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

"Saskatchewan has unique requirements in terms of roads and other infrastructure, as well as skills training money to help address the current labour shortage," Wall said. "Our province will need assistance in meeting all of these needs."

"Although these meetings are brief, my task in Ottawa is to begin articulating a vision of Saskatchewan as a permanent leader in the Canadian economy, and continue pressing the federal government for partnerships in strategic areas that can help accomplish this goal," Wall said.
