Student looking for a summer job are encouraged to apply with the Saskatchewan public service.
One of the biggest employers of students in the province, the Saskatchewan public service hires hundreds of post-secondary students to work across the province in a variety of jobs throughout Government ministries.
"Now is the time to apply," Minister responsible for the Public Service Commission Wayne Elhard said. "We have a wide variety of jobs for students over the summer. These give students good pay and great experience in a professional workplace. Considering the province's current economic boom, the provincial government is encouraging all employers, both in the public and private sector to hire students this summer."
Students can select their preferences for work location through an online application form. They can specify types of work they'd like to do based on their chosen field of study or area of interest.
The majority of student hiring in the public service takes place in late March and throughout April. Most students are hired to work from May to August, but some student job opportunities are available during the school year. Students must be taking classes full-time at a post-secondary institution in the fall to qualify for the program.
"Students always bring a fresh perspective and a high level of energy into our workplace," Fort Qu'Appelle Young Offender Program Supervisor Bev Dammann-Hofmeister said. "They demonstrate a readiness to learn, they're consistently reliable and they take pride in the work they do. As someone who has hired students in previous years, I will definitely hire students in the future."
Previous student opportunities with the public service have included research officers, biologists, engineers, park maintenance workers and policy development officers.
"My summer employment gave me hands-on experience which greatly added to my education," Sara Bird said, who worked with Dammann-Hofmeister as a student last summer.
Bird has completed her social work practicum in the public service and is now currently working full-time in the public service in her field of study. "My summer job helped me develop professionally and personally as it increased my confidence to work with a variety of people," Bird said.
