The Government House Museum and Heritage Property is celebrating Heritage Week today with the unveiling of a new exhibit showcasing a collection of needlework samplers.
"We are pleased to host this unique exhibit. Exploring and understanding our heritage is an important part of our own personal development and that of the entire province," Provincial Secretary Wayne Elhard said. "Government House and this exhibit are truly Canadian treasures that provide a snap shot of our rich history."
The exhibit is being presented in partnership with the Embroiderers' Association of Canada (EAC), who provided the twenty samplers on display from their heritage collection. The samplers, some dating as far back as the 18th century, are varied in origin and style and many have a direct connection to Saskatchewan.
"The heritage of the embroiderer is embroidery," EAC representative Janice Routley said. "This is why the collection is so important. To have a small portion of the collection on display in Government House, a heritage building, is very appropriate. Both partners are working to preserve our heritage."
The province has celebrated its rich heritage and diversity during Saskatchewan Heritage Week since 1991. Heritage Week coincides with the federally-proclaimed Heritage Day and Saskatchewan's Family Day on February 18. The Embroiderers' Association of Canada Heritage Collection was also started in 1991 with the passing of their founder, Leonida Leatherdale and has over 500 items to date.
