Minor football in Saskatchewan received a boost today with an announcement from the Premier, the Minister responsible for Sport and the best right offensive tackle in the CFL.
At a news conference at Scott Collegiate in Regina, Premier Brad Wall and Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell announced that Saskatchewan Roughrider Gene Makowsky will lead a project to examine and expand the role of minor football in developing positive values in children and youth.
"With the recent victory of the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Grey Cup, football is on Saskatchewan's mind like never before," Wall said. "This is a serious effort to realize the potential of our youth and encourage active, healthy lifestyles, especially in our inner cities."
Gene Makowsky will examine the current state of minor football in communities across the province. Through consultations with community leaders and sports organizations, he will develop a report that identifies ways to overcome barriers to participation and help realize the potential of Saskatchewan boys and girls through football.
"The Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport is looking forward to working with Gene," Tell said. "His experience and commitment to sport in Saskatchewan make him an ideal choice to lead this project."
Gene Makowsky, a four-time CFL All-star and substitute teacher, started with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1995. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Mr. Makowsky donates much of his time to charitable community activities.
"I am tremendously proud of my Saskatchewan roots," Mr. Makowsky said. "Without amateur football in high school, I would never have had the opportunity to join the Roughriders and bring home the Grey Cup. Kids deserve access to sport and physical activity. There are some exciting new minor leagues in places like Swift Current and Yorkton. I want to find out what works to get programs like that started and I am particularly interested in advancing football in our inner cities."
Makowsky will also work with Football Saskatchewan to expand interest in the game and make recommendations on how the sport can grow. Saskatchewan minor football has seen renewed interest in recent years. Over the last decade the number of participants in minor football leagues has tripled in some areas.
