A new Bariatric Surgery Assessment Clinic in Regina will help patients from across Saskatchewan who are morbidly obese. The provincial government has committed over $850,000 for equipment and operating costs for the 15-month pilot project.
"This is an issue identified as a priority by the Saskatchewan Party while in Opposition and I am pleased now, in government, to offer these patients access to this clinic," Health Minister Don McMorris said. "We recognize the need to address the increasing incidence of obesity in a carefully considered and responsible way. The clinic will be able to accept about 100 patients per year for assessment."
Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region will operate the clinic as a pilot project and follow emerging practices in weight loss reduction treatments, which emphasize a multi-disciplinary approach. The clinic will provide pre-operative assessment and intervention, surgical intervention and post-operative follow-up.
"Our Bariatric Surgery Clinic, which is the first of its kind in Saskatchewan, is designed to help people succeed in their weight loss goals and develop healthy lifestyles," Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region Surgical Services executive director Trent Truscott said. "Obesity is a significant concern in our province and we see this program as one step in addressing that problem."
Saskatchewan's Surgical Patient Registry shows that nearly 300 patients are on the wait list for a bariatric procedure. Approximately 20 per cent of the patients are from outside of the province. Patients can be referred to the new program by their family physicians. The Ministry of Health has notified these patients about the program and how to access services. The clinic is expected to begin accepting patients in the spring.
Several surgical procedures for bariatric weight loss are insured for morbidly obese Saskatchewan patients who have surgery in other provinces. Patients are responsible for travel and accommodation costs, and are asked to verify that the procedure is an insured service before making a booking.
Saskatchewan is working to encourage residents to live healthy lifestyles, and has committed an additional $4 million over the next four years to promote wellness and preventative care through education, nutrition and physical activity.
