Saskatchewan vehicle owners may soon notice changes to the province's licence plate.
Beginning in early 2009, SGI will be switching from steel to aluminium licence plates as well as introducing a font style that is easier for law enforcement and the public to read at a quick glance.
"SGI is helping Saskatchewan Go Green by using a licence plate material that allows for a more environmentally friendly manufacturing process," Crown Corporations Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said. "At the same time, we are providing law enforcement and the public a more readable licence plate."
The new licence plates will protect the environment because aluminium does not corrode and can be covered with white pre-cleared reflective licence plate sheeting that does not require the toxic dipping solution currently used to seal steel plates.
"We are pleased that the government has considered the needs of local law enforcement when updating the province's licence plate," Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police Chief Dale McFee said. "The new font is easier to read than the current font, which will allow for improved enforcement."
"Our goal is to serve our customers while focusing on new ways to help create a cleaner, healthier environment," Cheveldayoff said. "By making these enhancements to Saskatchewan's licence plate, we reaffirm our commitment to the environment and help make the job of law enforcement easier."
SGI plans to phase in the aluminium licence plates early in 2009, once the current inventory has been used. There is no additional cost to SGI or its customers for moving to a new plate material and a new font.
